Kurtis Lauffer

Kurtis  was born in Northwestern Pennsylvania and served with honor in the U.S. Army’s 3rd Infantry Regiment at Arlington National Cemetery.

After earning his Mortuary Science degree from Gupton-Jones College in Atlanta, he built a 30-year career as a licensed mortician in Arizona, where he continues to serve the community. He has also held leadership roles, including President of the Arizona Funeral, Cemetery, and Cremation Association.

A devoted Christian, husband, father, and avid poker player, Kurtis brings a lifetime of experience at the intersection of service, loss, and humanity to his writing—always hoping his stories resonate with readers long after the final page.

Kurtis is currently completing his first novel, Reaping: The New Justice, a haunting dark fantasy that explores justice, redemption, and the thin boundary between life and whatever waits beyond it.

Coming Soon!

The afterlife has rules. Justice is one of them.

Death reaches Drake Themus at the place he least expects—grieving at the grave of his wife. In the quiet aftermath, the Grim Reaper offers him a choice: step into eternity… or step into service. Drake chooses service and becomes Justice, the one who weighs what must be balanced.

Thrown into a realm where death is work, Drake meets the other Reapers—Accident, Murder, Suicide, and more—each with their own rules, burdens, and territories. Through a series of vivid, interconnected vignettes, Drake witnesses how souls cross over, how consequences echo, and how the unseen machinery of fate truly works.

But even as he learns the responsibilities of Justice, the world he left behind pulls at him. Drake watches his daughter struggle in ways he can’t fix, revealing that the afterlife doesn’t promise tidy resolutions… and that even among Reapers, conflict and conscience can collide.

A reflective, imaginative, and deeply human tale, Reaping: The New Justice explores grief, purpose, and the fragile balance between mercy and consequence.

Advance Praise: “Compelling and compassionate—this story makes you rethink fate, forgiveness, and the weight of consequence.”
